An OSCE is a performance-based exam designed to test clinical skill performance and competence in skills such as communication, clinical examinations, procedures and techniques, and evaluation and interpretation of results. An OSCE typically comprises of a circuit of stations ranging from 5 to 15 minutes in length, in which each candidate is examined on a one-to-one basis with one to two examiners using simulated or standardized patients. The OSCE presents challenges for those who are not

familiar with the exam format. Knowledge is the basis on which the OSCE is built, but this knowledge must be demonstrated through interaction with standardized patients employing appropriate communication skills and patient rapport for the culture in the allocated timeframe provided. It is vital that OSCE candidates understand the Canadian healthcare system, culture, medical ethics, exam expectations, and regulations.
