Module 9 Description

This module introduces you to the concepts of teamwork in the Canadian healthcare system and the characteristics of a well-functioning team specific to medical contexts. We will also look at the National Inter-professional Competency Framework. We will discuss roles and expectations. You will be exposed to the concept of collective competence and gain an understanding of current issues with regards to teamwork. Lastly, we will look at how to best resolve conflicts between team members when they occur from a communication and cultural viewpoint so that you can work effectively as a team member in a North American context.

How will Module 9 benefit me?

This module will introduce you to complexities of teamwork. Delivery of effective inter-professional healthcare requires both competent individuals and competent teams. However, the relationship between competent individuals and competent teams requires a more sophisticated understanding. Individual and team analysis showed that the individual team members’ goals, understandings, values and routines are not linearly related to the team’s collective functioning. This understanding has led to the conclusion that effective teamwork requires not only training of individuals but also the entire team to work successfully together.

You will have the opportunity to explore your own experiences in healthcare and both the rewards and challenges of working within a team. We will discuss expectations within the North American medical context including resolving conflict.
